Happy New Year
The new year is quickly approaching and what a year it has been. I have accomplished many things during the year that have made both the store and my personal life much more fulfilled and organized. Now, it's time to get on track with this body. When I started the store in '05 I was approximately 30 pounds, maybe more, lighter. It's time to straighten out my priorities and get my act together. I will give myself a reasonable, reachable goal and try to get halfway back to where I was 3.5 years ago. My husband and I are determined to be healthy for the sake of longevity. We have lots of responsibilities with four children and we want to be here on earth as long as possible. That being said! It was a grilled chicken salad for lunch!!!

Wow...the holiday season is upon us. I have been busy as an elf but the festivites are just beginning. The tree is decorated...maybe not my best design...but it is up. And I am relieved.

YARD SALE SATURDAY - RAIN OR SHINE
Looks like a chance of rain but that won't stop us. We will hold the yard sale indoors and proceed ahead with raising a little extra money for Christmas Cheer this year!!!

Christmas Cheer
After items have been in our store for over six months we provide the owners with the option of picking up their belongings or donating them. We normally donate to Trollinger's Treasures. However, we decided it might be a good idea to try to help agencies that don't actually have a store front to accept these items. We will be having a yard sale next satuday in the parking lot behind the building in order to raise money for Christmas Cheer. The items range from books, and accessories to chairs and tables and beds. If you have items that you would like to donate please drop them off prior to Saturday at the rear entrance of Bella's House.

Thanksgiving
The Christmas Parade is quickly approaching. I have to get the decorations down out of the attic and be ready! We have a great spot out front for watching the parade and we are at the very beginning! I usually try to serve a few refreshments and friends are welcome to join us at Front Street.

Carousel Cinemas
I am frantically working on a commercial that we will have at the movie theatre starting in December. I thought it would be a great way to advertise the things that we have in the store and show people exactly what we are and what we have. It will also cut down on paper advertising WASTE!

Early Voting
Wow, what a busy time of year this can be. We are looking forward to having Trick or Treating Downtown Friday from 3-5. And, we are experiencing a very high level of traffic in the store due to early voting. I have not seen the sidewalk outside the library empty yet this week.
I keep looking for a good time to head over and see if the line is low but it always seems to stretch down the street and around the corner. Way to go Alamance County!!!

Halloween
Trick or Treating Downtown is Friday from 3:00 - 5:00 pm.
It starts at the Depot with a list of participating business' giving out candy.
It's a great idea for small children that can't stay out late and don't want to be out after dark.
Hope to see you there.

Girl's Weekend at the Beach
It was a beautiful weekend at the beach. Girl fun, dominoes, eating and shopping. Found some new, fun shops that carry neat and different gift ideas. Some of these items were at the market in Atlanta when we were there in July. We would love to have more of these fund things at Bella's House.

Paint Class
We will start our paint class again this Thursday from 7-8:30pm. Simply bring a small piece of furniture and your favorite paint color. We will have all the other materials that are necessary. Call to sign up. This class is limited in size because I am still not in full use of my right shoulder. It is much better and no more sling. But I don't think I can shake a paint can just yet.

Inventory System
We have started using a new inventory system that will do a much better job of keeping up with markdowns. The new tags have the markdown assigned and we won't have to go around with that red pen any longer. When we started the new system September 1st we also started a new markdown system. We will be no longer waiting 90 days for that first red line. At 45 days we will deduct 15%, 45 more days another 15% and 45 days another 15%. Again, the system does it for us and we can move things along a little faster. If at the end of six months the item has not sold the consignor has the option to pick up the item or donate it to one of our many places in town that could use a helping hand. Come in and check it out. Let me know what you think.

Rugs, Rugs, & More Rugs...
We have a huge selection of rugs right now. I think I shall have a sale!!! I am going to take a bunch of photos and update the web site with a "set" for everyone to see.
I have been out of commision for a few weeks - rotator cuff surgery - the right one and yes I am right handed. The explaination for no updates to the blog. But I would really like to comment on how nice the general public has been. People see me coming with the arm in a sling and immediately offer to assist me in any way possible. It has been very uplifting and brings a special warmth inside to know that people are so kind. So if you ever see someone that looks like they might need your help - know that you could make them feel warm and fuzzy inside by simply offering!!!

Pottery Barn furniture
I have a friend that is interested in selling the Pottery Barn furniture in her son's bedroom. The distressed black twin bed, chest of drawers, nightstand, gas pump, television and lamp are all included at $900. This furniture is not in the store but arrangements can be made to see it at your convenience. As you can probably imagine she paid a lot more than this for the ensemble but she needs to make some changes in sleeping arrangements because of another baby on the way. Congratulations to her family and to the lucky person that purchases this set for such a great price!

Lamps
I had a customer in the store today looking for good quality lamps at a reasonable price. I have in the past been lucky with a few suppliers purchasing lamps at great prices - new ones! However, they still aren't cheap. Unfortunately, I have to pay so much that I still have to ask $70-$100 EACH. I have learned the hard way that you get what you pay for when purchasing lamps. TJ Maxx has some great looks but they NEVER last. The ones I have loved always have some damage or break very easily. Target has cute ones too, but if you have to buy the shade and the other parts it adds up very quickly and you are investing over $100. We try to put some of our good lamps on the website. We will be happy to pass along any great deals that we may find in the near future.

Paint Class for Fall
Interested in painting your own furniture??? Well, we have just the class for you. We have spent the summer wrapping up a few projects that took a little longer than the four week session and now we are ready to start again. The only problem is that I will be having shoulder surgery next week and we will have to allow time for me to heal. So, October sounds good. Call us 336-229-3699 to sign up!

Green Solutions
Sherwin Williams has introduced a new area on their web site discussing the ways that they can help minimize impact of air quality and maximize performance of their product. It doesn't really address the chemicals used to make the paint but there are some helpful hints and good basic information that we could all learn from. Things like how we wash our painting utensils is important to our environment as well as how many times you paint a room. Isn't once really enough. Make sure you have the right color the first time and it will save you money and save our environment. Check it out at http://www.sherwin-williams.com/pro/green/

CBK makes the news
CBK TAKES PART IN ABC’S
EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION
CBK, one of the country’s leading wholesalers of quality home décor, gifts, and accessories, is pleased to announce that the company’s home accessories as well as items from its popular Casa Cristina licensed product line, were asked to be a part of the season finale episode of ABC’s hit TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is committed to rebuilding or renovating homes of deserving families in just seven days. Each episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition features a talented design team, contractors and several hundred volunteers who work around-the-clock to rebuild an entire house including the exterior and landscaping in the seven day time span. In the season five finale, 18 builders from 12 different states gathered to make Extreme Makeover: Home Edition history by rebuilding not only a home for the Usea family, but also to rebuild Noah’s Ark Missionary Baptist Church which sustained heavy damage when Hurricane Katrina ripped through New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005.
CBK donated several home décor items from different product categories, including its Antiquity Collection lanterns, Hacienda Collection cabinet with an iron stand, table and floor lamp set, Fleur De Lis Bookends and an ottoman. From the Casa Cristina Collection™, a starburst design mirror; cream marble top tables, filigree oval mirrors, wall décor, a 3-panel folding floor screen, octagonal mirrors, and multi-sided mirrors were included.
“There is no doubt that the work completed on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition touches peoples’ lives in such a deep and meaningful way,” said Terry Stewart, President of CBK. “It is a tremendous honor for CBK to have been asked to participate in this family’s story. We hope that others can appreciate the dedication and commitment of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew as they continue to make a difference, and in many ways become heroes to those whose lives they have touched.”

August Paint Class
It looks like paint class will have to be postponed for August and regroup in September. The old shoulder needs some down time and a little surgery too. I won't be able to use my right arm for a few weeks and painting left handed might not work.
We have a few girls wrapping up their pieces over the next few weeks but then we can get started again in the fall.

Atlanta Gift Market
Heading to Atlanta this weekend for the market. We are looking for more hardware and fun things to add to our collection of new stuff at the store. I have been researching a line of dinnerware that I would love to carry. We have the great possibility of the "Company Shops Market" joining us downtown and I want to be ready for shopper that will have eating on their minds. Dinnerware, napkins, placemats, aprons(which we already have some really cute ones) and maybe even some glassware.
Should be a fun trip.

She's a Pirate
Just got back from Greenville where my oldest daughter will be attending in the fall. We had orientation and actually took a few days to set up her apartment. It is very exciting times. When ask to tell about herself she said "I like fruit" and when meeting with her advisor I cried. We make quite the pair!!!

The previous email problem that I was having is actually all worked out now.
I am receiving mail at rshowerman@bellashouse.com. I noticed that I had not made that statement when I received an email today from a "fan" of the store that was so kind to correct some gramatical errors that I have on the web site where we post photos.
I can't wait to share the comments with all the girls at the store. We get the biggest kick out of the terms and labels that people (including us) place on the articles in the store. We are very thankful for any information you can give us because we do not claim to be experts. We just love what we do. And I think we are pretty good at it - even if we call it a "whatnot" or "doodad". We have fun correcting each other and welcome your advice as well.

Summer fun
Wow! It is really hard to believe how bad I am at updating this thing. I guess summer has just taken over and I am running out of time. But not work. We have some great things in right now. I am starting a series of photos for the before and after part that I want to add to the blog. And paint class continues on. There are a few dates that it is not being offered during the summer but basically we will keep working around everyone's vacations.

Downtown Burlington
You may have heard about the plan to revitalize downtown Burlington, but have you seen the plan. You can by logging onto the Downtown Corporation's website. At www.burlingtondowntown.com there are several photos, the diagram of intentions as well as the actual plan written by the firm that was hired to study our area. Check it out!
Among other things that you may not know about downtown...The "Firefly on Spring Street" is a great new clothing store. It is certainly a welcome addition to Burlington as well as the downtown area. The mother/daughter combo that own and operate the business have a great eye for fun clothing, shoes, jewelry and handbags.
With National Bike Week coming up this month it is very important to notice the new "J&L Bicycle" Shop down the street. They will be sponsoring several events this month that include a ladies ride on Sundays and info about riding your bike to work!!!

PROM
What a night??? Or I should say day. The entire Saturday was spent getting ready for PROM. It was incredible and she looked absolutely radiant. Not only did my oldest daughter look beautiful she felt beautiful! She had a fabulous time and at 3:47am when she arrived home from the after-prom party she was truly the happiest I have seen her since the days of amusement parks being the hi-lite in her life. There is something about dressing up and attending a special event that makes you glow with joy and happiness.
Which leads me to a recent article that I read in Skirt Magazine...An interview with Margaret Cho..."When asked what persona represents beauty to her, Margaret's response is quick-witted. 'I think beauty is all about confidence and knowing that you are beautiful. The two things you need to be beautiful are confidence and lots of water. Drink lots of water and be confident. It is all you need.'"
OH SO TRUE!!!
Skirt magazine is a being distruted as a Guilford/Alamance county edition now and is available at Bella's House among other Burlington locations. For more intersting information check out www.skirt.com

Vacation Time
I took off last week to Hilton Head with my husband on a business trip. Wasn't a lot of work to be done. He played golf and we sat and watched golf with others that are in the same line of work with him. I met a lot of fun people and saw a lot of great things.
Another ECU Mom, Yes my oldest daughter is heading off to ECU after graduation. We went to check out the campus this week and see her new apartment. She can't wait to decorate and furnish it. Already measuring walls. Wonder where she gets that from.
One of things I picked up and read was a cute paper/magazine that is published monthly called "Skirt". It had some great articles "for women only" and I read it from cover to cover. I was impressed with the advertising as well. It turns out that there is an edition for Greensboro/Burlington and we now have that available in the store. Look for the Bella's House ad in June.

April Showers
I can't believe it is already the middle of April...WOW!!! The april paint class is going really well and May has already been filled. Signing up now for June. I think we will have to spread out that session between June and July to compensate for makeups and vacations. Then get back on track for August. I am shocked that I am planning that far in advance. Thanks to all the creative people that we have interested in painting furniture.
We are trying something new and different at the store in April. We have "indoor" sidewalk sales going on every Saturday this month. We have pulled all the old things to the center and marked down the prices. Let's clean up and clean out.

Children's Museum
Good News! Alamance County will receive a much needed Children's Museum in Graham, NC. We will all benefit from this outlet for the young in our community. If you have never been to a facility such as this you will be thrilled with the interaction and stimulation that it will provide for the child and adult being with the child. It is a good thing!!!
Just like the proposed progress for Downtown Burlington. The City Council will meet on April 1st to discuss the prepared proposal for renovating and rebuilding hope for a DOWNTOWN that will be beneficial for all. It will be a long process, just like the proposed "Children's Museum". The firm that has prepared the plan has done an excellent job with staging the efforts in ways that will allow the city to asthetically bring the area up to standards using funds that are already available.
The next few steps are simple and much needed. But the intent to bring new business and investment into downtown will take quite some time. Nothing of this magnitude happens overnight. This project will definitely be something to look forward to and to watch the progress will be fascinating.

Transforming Home Furnishings
Alamance Magazine allowed me to write a little blurb for the March edition. Tranformations
Designing a home with quality furniture that fits your budget can be easier than you think. This trendy new way to shop is “resale”. Shopping at flea markets, antique shows and consignment stores is a great way to save a little money. You can find that upscale and unique piece of furniture or accessory, while helping your community recycle and reuse.
Wide varieties of people have caught on already and have furnished their college apartments, their first homes and met their changing needs when relocating. The resale industry is doing well nationwide for reasons like the “shabby chic” and distressed look that you see in the decorator magazines. Top rated television shows are all about decorating on a budget. They bring in a designer and use unique and creative ways to makeover a room while often using pieces that can be recycled, reused and restored for different purposes. Do it yourself interior design and decorating is becoming more popular with these resources.
Don’t forget to think outside the box, mix the old and the new. That piece that your neighbor threw out when he was moving, could be just what you are looking for with a fresh coat of paint. Pay attention to the elements, making sure the piece has good lines, and lots of character. The color and hardware can easily be changed giving it new personality and you could have just saved space in the landfill.
Shoppers love to find a bargain, and what better way to find it than locating a good piece of used furniture. Prices in consignment stores can range from $19 for a lamp to $900 for a formal dining room suite that might have originally cost over $3000. Sometimes when shopping for new pieces the prices can be overwhelming. Check all the possibilities and discover that it can be very affordable to reach your design when you shop “resale”.

March Madness at Bella's House
I can't believe it's March already. And somebody forgot to tell me about the time change. I guess I have been so busy with the painting classes that I wasn't paying attention. Wednesday and Thursday classes for the month of March started last week. We have fun participants doing extremely creative things. I am so excited. Everybody got their pieces sanded and primed last week and we will start the color process next week. I will share photos soon. And we already have a few sign ups for April. Remember we will continue this as a monthly class. If you have to miss a session you can make it up next month.
And "How bout those HEELS?"

Rejuvenate Downtown Burlington
The Burlington Downtown Corporation held a meeting last night going over the plan that has been proposed for the revitalization of "Downtown Burlington". Of course I am very excited to see the process and hope that others will become motivated and get involved...
There are some great ideas that will make the area more asthetically pleasing as well as ideas that make propositions welcoming for investors. The specifics of the plan are being presented to the Burlington City Council later this week. If you have an opinion, hopefully positive, put it in writing or make an appearance. Please!

Wednesday Paintng Class
Well, the Fox 8 Morning show was a huge success. We had a lot of fun and received a very good response from viewers about the show. I am thrilled that we were able to let the viewers know how easy the process is to think about recyclying and reusing in order to make the piece of furniture your own. We have filled up the Thursday painting class and now we are quickly filling up a Wednesday class as well. Hurry and sign up if you are thinking about it. Or you can wait til April. If there is a date that you can't make it we will certainly make it up. We hope that the class becomes very popular and we will continue to do it every month!!!

WGHP Fox 8
I have been organizing the store all day and gathering pieces to discuss tomorrow morning with Shannon Smith from WGHP Fox 8 Morning News. She will report on reycling, reusing and restoring furniture. Have you ever noticed how many people just toss out something that needs a minor repair and a little creativity. Everyone doesn't have what it takes to create a masterpiece but we all have resources available such as DIY and HGTV and even the local home improvement stores. Then there is the new painting class at Bella's House. We will show you how to give it a personal touch! Off to bed early. The camera crew arrives at 5:30 AM!!!

Islamorada
I just got back from a long weekend with the girls in Islamorada. Instead of moving furniture we went fishing! Deep Sea that is!!! Also squeezed in a little time for the HGTV Dream home. I couldn't believe how beautiful it truly was. The view was incredible and the furnishings were to die for. Photos attached!!!

New Stuff
We've been busy painting furniture and getting new things out this week. I havent' had a chance to get the photos on the web but a few pieces have already sold! We are all busy being very creative. We had a practice run at our paint class on Monday. Just wanted to make sure the timing would work and that we had all the supplies we would need. All is well!!! Ready to go on March 6th and signing people up already for the next session in April.
Some of the items that we ordered in Atlanta have come in. Good looking fireplace screens and some cute wastebaskets. I need to order more of the fun, beaded fan pulls - we have sold out!
I had a very interesting phone call earlier from a reporter that my husband and I met at the last meeting for the Downtown Renovation Project. He is writing an article that will hopefully stir some interest for more business downtown. Watch and see if I get quoted!

Exciting Responses!
The response for the painting class has been great! I am very excited and eager to see some fabulous pieces of furniture come out at the end. We will schedule the next session for April 10th and then May 8th. Make up sessions will be held on Mondays and we can always schedule something that is convenient for you.
I would love to see the classes go through the summer. We can play that by ear. There has also been some mention of doing it during the day - which is definitely possible.
The unfinished furniture has arrived. We have a few pieces out and I want to get the photos on the web site tomorrow. There is an incredible kitchen island with a butcher block top.
Consignors are busy cleaning up and cleaning out and we have restocked with some great things this week. Busy times at Bella's.

Unfinished Furniture
We have so many exciting things going on at the store right now. I just submitted an article to Alamance Magazine for their March issue about shopping for used furniture. And it's official, we will now carry an unfinished furniture line. There are several reasons why this will be a great addition to what we already have. I love to paint furniture and we can now paint it whatever color you want. We will be able to order from a catalog and we can even get it finished in the color of your choice. I will post photos as soon as possible. The first shipment will arrive Monday!!!

Painting Classes
It's official. The painting classes will begin in March. I want to help other people realize their potential. Making over a piece of furniture is as easy as 1-2-3-4. Four sessions to complete your design. Anyone can bring in a piece, not the whole dining room, but a table, chair, or even a server. We have a place set aside to work on four pieces at one time and let the painter/designer leave it there to dry and come back the next week to work on it again. It's going to be great. I am very excited about the possibilities.

In Atlanta, I attended a seminar on "Becoming a Destination Business". It was quite interesting. I found and ordered several fireplace screens. It's really hard to find one in stores around here that aren't just plain and ordinary. The pretty ones in the catalogs like Horchow and Pottery Barn are priced at several hundred dollars. These will be just over $100. I also purchased lots of really, really, fun jewelry that I can't wait to get to the store and put out tomorrow. Of course, I will probably want to keep half of it.

Weekends Away
I am preparing frantically to leave town tomorrow. Off to Atlanta for the Gift and Home Accessories Market. I am taking a good friend so that we can charge through and go out for a nice dinner. The weather doesn't look so nice for the drive tomorrow but it will be nice to have a little get away.
I have been busy painting furniture this week. This desk is the latest. There really is something to be said for the quality of older furniture. It is so worth the work! The drawers glide so nicely. The hardware is in excellent condition. All this piece needed was a little love and care.

I am really excited about my new marketing campaign. I want to make people aware of how used furniture can be recycled. We can reuse, restore and recycle for fun. I love the pieces that I have found. We call our living room Woman's World. I have a big white fluffy rug and thoughts of things that are special to me. I have found just the right elements for this room and there is not one single piece that was purchased NEW.
